Will Campbell – “Think Tank”
One would expect a jazz piece entitled “Think Tank” to be heady. And the title track from Will Campbell’s latest offering does flex our grey matter, but not at the expense of musicality. Here is a refreshing bit of mind-candy, like lemonade for the brain on a warm summer’s day. A cool breeze through the synapses, if you will. As clean a recording of acoustic piano, drums and bass as you will find, this is a virtuoso performance of an original and ambitious composition. Nothing I don’t love about it.

Andy Cotton – “Shit Rock feat. Brian J” mp3
When we see “Shit Rock” in a title we wonder, is this rock shit, as in shite? Or is it The Shit? Dilemmas never cease. Only one way to find out, and you guessed it my dears – I would never trouble you if it were excrement. After all, that’s not my gig. No. I post here only stuff that I really like. And upright bassist Andy Cotton’s dub exploration is some upright in this urban crucial reggae muthrfkin sh!t rock. Go forth and dubify.

Colin Banagan, The CB Blues Band – “Blues for the Lady” mp3
From this excellent Chicago Blues compilation, here’s a sweet and laid back instrumental piano blues from Colin Banagan. Minimal accompaniment by upright bass and smooth, brush-stick drumming provides an elegant backdrop for the piano man to stretch out in every which way. “Blues for the Lady,” ladies and gents. A magnificent, understated recording.
